The Panch Badri Yatra is a pilgrimage to five sacred temples dedicated to Lord Vishnu located in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand, India.
These five temples are:
Badrinath Temple, dedicated to Lord Vishnu, is perched at an elevation of 3,133 meters (10,279 feet) above sea level, it rests along the banks of the Alaknanda River in the Garhwal hill tracts of the Chamoli district. Recognized as one of the 108 Divya Desams—sacred abodes of Vishnu—the temple holds immense significance for Vaishnavites. It's also a vital part of the Char Dham pilgrimage, which includes Rameswaram in the south, Dwarka in the west, and Jagannath Puri in the east.
Adi Badri is a group of 16 small temples located approximately 17 kilometers from Karnaprayag in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. The primary temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and features a black stone idol about one meter tall, depicting Vishnu holding a mace, lotus, and chakra. These temples are believed to have been established between the 5th and 8th centuries, possibly under the patronage of the Gupta period or by Adi Shankaracharya to promote Hinduism in remote regions. It is said, when access to the main Badrinath shrine was impeded due to weather conditions, pilgrims would worship at Adi Badri.
Bhavishya Badri is believed to be the future abode of Lord Vishnu. Its one of the revered Panch Badri temples and houses an image of Narasimha, the lion-faced incarnation of Vishnu. Pilgrims undertake the journey to this secluded temple not only for its spiritual significance but also for the serene natural beauty that envelops the path. Situated at an elevation of 2,744 meters (9,003 feet) in the village of Subhain, it lies approximately 17 kilometers from Joshimath, accessible via a trek through dense forests from the motorable road terminating at Saldhar. According to local legend, a time will come when the current Badrinath shrine becomes inaccessible due to natural calamities, symbolizing the world's moral decline. At that juncture, it's believed that Lord Badrinath will reappear as a black stone (Shaligram) at Bhavishya Badri, making it the new center of worship.
Vridha Badri, translating to "Old Badri," is one of the seven sacred shrines collectively known as Sapta Badri, dedicated to Lord Vishnu in Uttarakhand, India. Located in the village of Animath, approximately 7 kilometers from Joshimath on the Rishikesh–Joshimath–Badrinath road, the temple sits at an elevation of 1,380 meters (4,530 feet) above sea level. According to legend, Lord Vishnu appeared in the form of an old man (Vriddha) before the sage Narada, who was performing penance at this location. Consequently, the idol enshrined in the temple depicts Vishnu as an elderly man. It is also believed that the divine craftsman Vishwakarma carved the original image of Badrinath here. This image was later found partially damaged in the Narad-kund pond by Adi Shankaracharya, who reinstalled it at the main Badrinath Temple.
Yogadhyan Badri, also known as Yoga Badri, is one of the seven sacred shrines collectively referred to as Sapta Badri, dedicated to Lord Vishnu in Uttarakhand, India. Situated in the village of Pandukeshwar at an elevation of 1,829 meters (6,001 feet), it lies between Joshimath and Badrinath on the Rishikesh–Badrinath highway. According to Hindu mythology, King Pandu, father of the Pandavas from the epic Mahabharata, meditated at this location to atone for the sin of killing two mating deer, who were sages in their previous lives. It is believed that the Pandavas were born here, and King Pandu installed the bronze idol of Lord Vishnu in a meditative posture, which is enshrined in the temple. This life-sized idol, carved from Shaligram stone, is unique due to its depiction of Vishnu in deep meditation.
